2007 Outstanding Student of the Year

Erin Peers always wanted to be a nurse and made sure her secondary school years were focused on this aim. She did work experience in the nursing field in Year 10 and completed a health certificate along with her VCE while also dealing with some major health issues.

Erin applied for the Certificate IV in Health (Nursing) through the Koorie Education Unit at GOTAFE and with assistance from the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program made the move to Shepparton to start the next phase of her life. "The move was challenging, I didn't know anyone in the area, but I received a lot of support from GOTAFE staff and family which helped me stay motivated." Erin supported herself during her studies, working part time in an aged care facility.

Erin demonstrated strong leadership skills with participation in major community events and also represented GOTAFE at the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program National Conference in Canberra, where she shared her inspirational journey with other young Indigenous people.

"What I found was the course theory was applicable to real work situations so when I did practical placements in aged care and acute facilities I found what I had learnt was very relevant," said Erin. "The course gave me credits towards a university nursing degree which provides extra options for a career."

After completing her four year Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine degree Erin hopes to become a paramedic and eventually work in remote areas dealing with Aboriginal health care issues.
