Koorie Education

GOTAFE offers a range of programs specifically for the Koorie community in business, hospitality, indigenous culture and VCAL.

Courses are conducted at the Shepparton campus in a purpose designed Koorie Education Unit. The Unit was established in 1993 to meet the learning needs of local Koorie students.

The Unit has proven highly successful and in 2006 won the Wurrekar award for best TAFE Institute providing Koorie vocational education and training.

The Unit was recognised for is achievement in establishing improved pathways and employment outcomes for Koorie TAFE students.

A bus provides students with a pick up and drop off service and has a computer study facility for Koorie students.

Indigenous Material Culture

This course prepares people to work at a variety of entry levels promoting and caring for indigenous material culture stored in communities and museums. It also aims to further their studies in areas such as management of Aboriginal cultural heritage and tourism.

Business

This course enables students to develop the basic competencies required to enter a business services position. Students may gain positions in office administration as receptionists, clerks and computer operators.

Hospitality

This course is designed to meet the needs of people seeking employment in a rapidly developing hospitality industry in the food and beverages area. Employment may be sought in hotels, restaurants, clubs, retail liquor outlets and reception rooms. Jobs include food and beverage attendant, bar attendant and front office clerical.

VCAL

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is designed to improve the pathways for young epople from secondary school to work and/or further education and training.

Students study in Literacy and Numeracy, Personal Development, Work Related Skills and Industry Specific Skills. There are three levels - Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. For more information on VCAL please contact the Koorie Education Unit.
