Agriculture
Agriculture includes the dairy, beef and sheep industry, mixed farming, pastures and crops, and covers topics such as farm safety, machinery operations, farm chemicals and chainsaw use.
Training is delivered through the Centre for Agriculture, Irrigation and Land Management from the William Orr Campus in Shepparton and the Christensen Lane Campus in Wangaratta, and in the workplace.
Dairy farming courses are offered through the National Centre for Dairy Education Australia. Campuses are located at Leongatha, Warragul, Shepparton and Terang.
Careers
Agriculture is a varied field with employment opportunities ranging from farm workers to supervisors or farm managers. Training may also lead to employment as a stock agent, machinery operator, or in the associated agricultural service industries.
Study Options
GOTAFE courses provide broad-based training in Agriculture with the opportunity to specialise in dairy, beef or sheep, cropping, or mixed farming which includes pigs, poultry, goats or other small animal breeding and production.
The Certificate II in Agriculture provides secondary school students with the broad based skills and knowledge necessary to enter further study for a career in agriculture. It can be done as a VET in Schools program or as an Australian School Based Apprenticeship (part time).
Students who complete the Certificate II may continue with the Certificate III in Agriculture. This is a traineeship course which aims to develop a skilled agricultural worker who can coordinate a wide range of operations.
The Certificate IV in Agriculture is a traineeship which provides management skills for agricultural activities in farm production.
The Diploma of Agriculture has been designed to provide the knowledge and skills required to undertake a farm production management role on a farm. It is suitable for those already employed in the industry.
The Advanced Diploma of Agriculture is suitable for those wanting to be a farm business manager.
Completion of some courses may also lead into further study at the higher education level at university.
