James Cox
Certificate IV in Agriculture
James Cox had plans to study higher education courses offered by the University of Melbourne at Dookie College, but failed to achieve the marks with his VCE to gain entry.
As James explains, "My careers teacher said to take a look at the GOTAFE courses and use them for a stepping stone into the degree," which is exactly what James is now doing. James comes from a farming background family that runs 1,400 acres of mixed farm at Cobram.
"The Certificate course was excellent – I gained really practical skills and the knowledge I need to operate any sort of farm. Just learning about plant identification, for instance, will give me a good grounding for my aspiration to become an agronomist," said James.
James is enrolled in the Diploma of Agriculture with GOTAFE at Dookie in 2007 and eventually hopes to enter a degree course to fulfil his dreams.
He does admit however that the family farm is still an attraction. "With the training I am doing I can always fall back on farming."
